How to Design When You Are Not Creative - Where to Begin?

I often hear people say they’re not creative. My usual response: ‘You’re probably more creative than you think.’ Sometimes, it’s just about finding your medium or outlet. We all have a creative spark, but it takes practice and experimentation to ignite it. Even designers struggle to translate their thoughts into tangible creations. The key? Just start. It’s a journey, not a destination.

  1. Start with inspiration: Look at magazines, websites, or Pinterest for ideas. Gather these images in one document or page.

  2. Create a mood board: Collect images, art, and samples that reflect your unique style or taste. Embrace colors and objects that speak to you. Have fun and don't set limits.

  3. Consider function: Think about how you want to use each space and prioritize your needs. Make a room-by-room list.

  4. Tell a story: Imagine each room as a scene in your life, with a unique character and purpose. Explain the feeling or mood of each space or write a "day in the life" story.

  5. Take a photo: Sketch over a photograph of a room. Try adding notes or drawing furniture, artwork, room accents, or cool lighting in perspective. Have fun exploring experimental ideas.

  6. Seek professional help: When ready to take your vision to the next level, consider hiring an architect or a designer for guidance.
